Shoal Creek Legendary Golf Course & Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama

The Shoal Creek property clubhouse replicates the Governor’s Palace in Williamsburg, Virginia. Facilities include a community town hall, golf pro shop, five guest houses, where members and their guests enjoy beautiful  scenery of the Dunnavant Valley.

Ranging from two to eight bedrooms, the five guest cottages – aptly named Nicklaus, Pate, Thompson, Alabama, and Townhall Suites – emulate the Williamsburg style. Lodgings also include four suites above the golf shop, providing 26 guest rooms and 34 beds for overnight visitors.

The Legacy of Shoal Creek: Jack Nicklaus’ Masterpiece in Golf Design

The origin of the award-winning golf course has become folklore.

According to the legend, Hall Thompson spent so much time discussing the golf course he wanted to create that his wife, Lucy, told him to stop talking and start digging.

One frigid December 1974 afternoon, Thompson sat next to Dunnavant Valley Road with Harald Lassen, Jr., awaiting Jack Nicklaus’ arrival after collaborating with Pete Dye and Desmond Muirhead. Shoal Creek provided the ideal canvas to create a superior and challenging golf course, with 1,550 densely wooded acres between the Oak and Double Oak Mountains.

“The land was terrific,’ Nicklaus observed, “and there was space for two golf courses. But Hall wanted no part of that. ‘We only want one golf course,” he later reflected, “but we want to make it a superior one.'”

Three years after the meeting, on November 1, 1977, Shoal Creek opened the course and welcomed visitors from worldwide to enjoy our superb golf club, complete with first-class amenities.

Superintendent Jim Simmons says, “What sets Shoal Creek apart from others is its uniqueness. Not only is every hole set off by itself, each one plays differently. And that came as much from Nicklaus as from Mr. Thompson, who was very hands-on during the entire process.”
